Why Did We Buy a Resort?

"Why did you buy a resort?"  Mike and I have gotten this question a lot over the last year.  We realized that there isn't a quick or easy answer to this question.  Owning a resort wasn't part of our long-term plan but we are definitely becoming better at trusting the journey and following our guts.  Warning, I'm going to tell the long story of how we got to this newest adventure (feel free to stop reading now if this doesn't interest you).
This story starts more than a decade ago.  Mike and I were living in Deerfield, we both worked hard and were successful in our careers.  Our offices were a couple blocks apart in Chicago's financial district.  We were also expecting our first child... we made plenty of money to hire full time child care and continue following our successful career paths but something shifted in both of us.  Months into interviewing child care providers, we just couldn't make a decision that made us happy.  After much discussion, I …

Our Guest Books

Every cottage at Indian Lake Resort has a guest book and we love to read the posts.  2019 was our first season as owners of the resort and we thought it would be nice to share the comments here.  We hope you'll enjoy reading them as much as we do!

Mackinac Island is only 90 miles east of our Resort!

Mackinac Island is only 90 miles east of Indian Lake Resort!  It is a fantastic day trip and a beautiful drive.

To get to the island, you'll ride the ferry from Mackinaw City.  You can buy your tickets in advance and have the option of bringing your bike with you (for an additional fee).  You can also rent bikes (and tandem bikes) when you get to the island.  We brought our bikes and Rich & Terri rented a tandem.

I do suggest you test out your bike before you start the 8.2 mile ride around the island... one of us (I won't name names) thought it would be a great idea to buy a bike because it was soooo cute!  This adorable cruiser with teal rims and a basket was the bike that would be ridden (and admired) everywhere!  Why not take a maiden voyage at Mackinac Island where the bike's vintage charm would fit right in?....

Mile marker 0.5... why is it so hard to keep up with everyone?  Mile marker 0.75...  OMG, I'm way more out of shape that I realized, I mean I'm…

Kitch-iti-kipi is a Must See When You're in Manistique

If you're visiting us at Indian Lake Resort or just passing through Manistique, Kitch-iti-ipi, is a must see.  It's only about a 10 minute drive from Indian Lake Resort.
One of the Upper Peninsula's major attractions, Kitch-iti-kipi or "The Big Spring" is two hundred feet across and forty feet deep. Over 10,000 gallons a minute gush from many fissures in underlying limestone, the flow continuing throughout the year at a constant 45 degree temperature so the spring never freezes and can be enjoyed any season of the year.
Jack & Cassie took turns "driving" the raft & the views were amazing!  We stopped by The Big Spring Inn for dinner after our visit.  They have a great selection of beers on tap!

OMG... Jack Polished off a 3/4 Pound Burger @ Clyde's Drive In!

Our favorite part of owning Indian Lake Resort is immersing ourselves in everything the UP has to offer and sharing our experiences with our guests!
Clyde's Drive In is a must visit when you are in Manistique!  We actually ate here twice in one week... the first trip was for amazing burgers (Jack ate the 3/4 pound Big C like it was nothing & then polished off my fries 😂).  Our second trip was for breakfast which is served from 10-11 in the morning (honestly, this is perfect timing for my slow moving family).

"Before" Pictures of the Cottages

We were so busy refreshing the cottages this year that we didn't have a lot of time to show pictures of what we were working on.  Here are some of the "before" pictures of the cottages when we bought them.  They were in good condition and guests had been staying in them for years.  We saw the potential that they had to be gorgeous and have truly enjoyed watching them transform.
These pictures were taken in 2018 right before we bought the property.
